UV Water Purifiers for Home
Ultraviolet chambers inactivate bacteria and viruses without chemicals. Relevant for private wells and boil-water advisories, not for chemical contaminants.

What this solution is
Chemical-free germicidal irradiation inactivating pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and parasitic protozoan cysts.
Water travels through a quartz sleeve surrounded by a germicidal UV-C lamp emitting light at 254 nanometers. The UV photon energy penetrates microbial cell walls and disrupts their DNA/RNA dimer bonds, preventing replication and infection.
Read the Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection technology guide →Limitations
- Does not remove any dissolved chemicals, heavy metals, minerals, or particulates
- Requires clear water: Turbidity and iron above 0.3 mg/L shadow microbes from the light (requires 5-micron pre-filtration)
- Requires continuous electricity; water does not receive residual disinfection downpipe
Installation and maintenance
Installation formats
- Point-of-Entry Whole-House
- Under-Sink Point-of-Use Stage
Maintenance requirements
- Replace UV-C lamp every 9,000 hours (annually)
- Clean quartz sleeve twice per year
Cost data: no operating-cost figure is published in this guide. Compare replacement schedules, wastewater, energy, and installation quotes for the exact model.
Certification to verify
A standard on a product is not enough by itself. Verify that the certification listing names the reduction claim you need.
- NSF/ANSI 55 (Ultraviolet Microbiological Water Treatment Systems, Class A / B)
Capability, not local water quality.
This solution guide describes treatment capability, not local water quality. PurityMap keeps local findings on water-system reports and matches products only after a documented concern and relevant certified claim align.
