How it worksMechanism describes the treatment process. Actual performance depends on the product, water chemistry, flow, maintenance, and certified claim.
Hard water passes over strong acid cation (SAC) resin beads saturated with sodium ions. The resin captures calcium and magnesium ions and releases an equivalent ionic charge of sodium. A periodic brine backwash regenerates the beads.
Potentially relevant contaminant families“Potentially relevant” means the mechanism may address members of the family. It does not mean every compound is reduced or that a specific product is certified for it.
Known limitations and trade-offs
- Not a health filter: Does NOT remove lead, arsenic, PFAS, chemicals, or bacteria
- Adds a modest concentration of sodium to drinking water (roughly 20–40 mg per glass, depending on incoming hardness)
- Produces brine discharge water during automated backwash cycles
